Goodmanham, Yorkshire Beggars Bush Well ?

One of three named wells in Goodmanham, the others being Lady  Well, and St Helen’s Well. Marked on OS map, beside an old green track, which follows the path of the Wold’s Way. The water issues from the slope and suns over a sandy bed to a nearby stream. Great Houghton, South Yorkshire Beggars Bush 1679

By a Deed of Exchange  dated 28 Nov 1679 Thomas Box acquired “land by the beggars bush, 1 land on long broome 1 eyes, other land on Thurnscoe Field east, 2 single lands on Carnaby field, all in Gt. Houghton”. The earliest entry used the definite article which suggests an actual bush, though it doesn’t prove anything about whether there was a beggar under under it. Read the rest of this entry »

Bentley, West Yorkshire Beggars Bush 1821

Referred to in Deeds as “3a. near Beggar’s Bush in Amersall Field” (1821). A map of Amersall and other fields dated 1735 showed them divided into smaller units. These open fields were not enclosed until after 1827. Read the rest of this entry »
