Beggars Bush: A Perambulation through the Disciplines of History, Geography, Archaeology, Literature, Philology, Natural History, Botany, Biography & Beggary

About

“The idea is to give all the information to help others to judge the value of your contribution; not just the information that leads to judgment in one particular direction of another”

Richard Feynman

I am a geographer by degree, a lawyer by profession and a historian by inclination, though as of 2025 I am starting a PhD in history and gradually retiring from being a lawyer. My interest in Beggars Bush was a byway which I followed for several years. This site was created in 2007 to publish my research for readers in the hope it would interest them. I hoped they (you) would comment, correct and contribute — see How to use this site. Thanks to those who have.

This site is not and never will be complete. I have posted notes on new sites, writers, speculations and information readers have contributed and will continue to do that. Digital humanities has moved on a lot since 2007 so this site looks dated. I’ve updated the links. If I had been starting now I would be able to offer a much better structure, including databases and GIS and be able to offer many more links to stable URLs.

I like talking about Beggars Bush. I would be pleased to give talks on Beggars Bush.

Thanks

I have not been alone on this journey. Along the way I have been accompanied, encouraged and helped by many people who know far more about subjects than I do. All foolishness is mine. Where they have helped with specific topics I have included an acknowledgement there. I would like to offer particular thanks to Phil Quinn, Neil Mortimer, late Sir Angus Fraser, Richard Coates, John Pile, Keith Briggs, Philip Saunders, Paul Cavill, Janet Pennington, Steve Poole and Peter Edwards.
